I just ate the most delicious, juicy, sweet cherries and was inspired to write about it. They are in season right now and are heavenly.
I have a confession to make …ready…ok, here goes…Eating fruit is a little hard for me. You can ask my Mom, growing up fruit wasn’t my go to snack. Obviously I know the benefits, but I have to make very conscious decisions daily to make sure I include fruit. Doing things like rinsing and cutting up the fruit soon after getting home from the grocery store so it is ready to go when I want it is helpful. I also keep frozen fruit on hand and use dried fruit in salads – they count too.
I also am sure to eat certain fruits when they are at their season’s peak. So, when I come across something as sweet and delicious as cherries are right now I take full advantage. Not only are they delicious they, like most fruits and vegetables, are full of health boosting properties. Here are a few really good reasons to run out and grab some.
- They are super rich in antioxidants that play a protective role against the aging of our skin, memory loss and Alzheimer’s, heart disease, arthritis, and cancer. The deeper the red the better!
- They are relatively low on the glycemic index at 22. This means they have less of an effect on blood sugars, which is a good thing for appetite control and avoiding fat storage.
- They are a great source of potassium, which can help to lower blood pressure.
- They are low in calories. Each 1 cup serving only has 100 calories. They are also a good source of fiber too, with 3 grams per cup.
There you go. Lots of health benefits from just one little tiny fruit. Go check them out and try some sweet deliciousness for yourself!
